Updateon Knee Problems Options

Hi everyone,
I had my aopointment with my rheumy nurse today. She checked my MRI results and told me there is moderate damage to my knee, and I have a Baker's Cyst at the back of my knee. She suggested having the fluid aspirated, I agreed if it will help. She brought the doctor in and he explained what he would do (never had it done before) and that I should get relief for up to two hours initially until the numbing wore off lol!! He said it will take a couple of days to really feel any better.

I went ahead with it, it was fine!!! He said he is surprised I've got away with not having it done before. I had a steroid jab in it, then one in my bum lol!! He said I need to rest if for 24 hours to take effect, luckily I am off tomorrow, the boys' mum has her parents down so I'm not needed, hurray!!!!
Now just hoping for some relief.
I have to go for a blood test on 27 December, ready to start the Ritixumab on 3 January.Smile

You sound like a tough cookie with your knee! LOL
I've not had a cyst, hopefully it will take some pressure off now?!

Excuse the pun, legs & knees up and have some "me" timeBigGrin

Hi Barbara - good news that you don't have much damage to the knee - hope the steroids work for you. I've got a baker's cyst - when my RA was really active then the cyst got huge and twice it burst and filled my calf with fluid - I was told back then that they didn't want to drain it because of the rsk of introducing infection. The surgeon also said that it's only temporary and it fills up again, so he doesn't like doing it. So I just had the steroid jabs and they helped a lot. Now it's a year later and my RA meds control the inflammation and all swelling has gone from my knee and the cyst is barely noticeable and doesn't hurt at all. It took a long while for that knee to settle down and I do still have a few problems but mainly because of osteo arthritis (but I'm getting to THAT age, so have to expect it!)

Bakers cyst are very common - loads of very active, fit people have them and generally they cause no problems. When I got talking about it at the gym I discovered several others had them. For me, iIt seems that if the cyst does cause pain and swelling then it's probably due to active RA inflammation, and as you know RA always centres on your body's weakest points so the wisest action is focus on getting the RA under control and the other problems tend to go away!

Really good luck and keep moving your joints if you can stand the pain - I'm convinced that helps to minimise joint damage long term. Sylvia xx

I've given it a good rest today, so hopefully that will be a good start. Tomorrow will be busier, but already it isn't as painful (fingers crossed)
Hopefully the Baker's Cyst won't cause problems, to be honest i didn't even know it was there!!

Hi Barbara glad you got the knee sorted ThumpUp , I had a backers cyst in my left knee before it got replaced and only new about it when it burst , fluid went in to the back of the calf and my calf was very swollen and sore ! I had to rest till the fluid had gone (consultation said your body will eventually get rid of the fluid ) they are very painful . I don't have it now as every thing was taken out when knee was replaced ThumpUp
